The municipality of Altenmarkt im Pongau is beautifully nestled between the mountains in the Austrian state of Salzburger Land, and is part of the district of Sankt Johann im Pongau. Altenmarkt im Pongau itself has a population of around 3600 people. Altenmarkt-Zauchensee is the perfect home base to start each day of your holiday, as the towns are centrally located between the alpine resort areas of Salzburger Sportwelt and the even more expansive skiing area of Ski Amadé.
Altenmarkt is a charming and cosy small rustic town. It lies at an altitude of 865 metres and, together with the alpine village of Zauchensee (1350m), forms a sweeping stretch of ski slopes running for over 20 km. In the town centre of Altenmarkt you’ll find characteristic old houses, a variety of quaint stores, supermarkets and restaurants, all surrounded by beautiful meadows and forests. And not to forget the always lively après-ski in the evening.
In wintertime you’ll celebrate in the ultimate Christmas atmosphere and summertime will amaze you with nature’s own green paradise. There’s plenty to do both in summer and winter seasons, such as regularly organised town festivals and all kinds of sports activities.
Since a few years, Altenmarkt also boasts its own toboggan run with lighting. During the day you can take the lift to the top. And if you fancy a run in the evening, you can take a taxi up to one of the two restaurants on the mountain. So it’s not hard to see how you can have the time of your life in Altenmarkt!
What to do
The slopes around Altenmarkt aren’t all that high and are therefore less dangerous with many Blue Pistes. If you’re a more experienced downhill skier, you can cross over to Flachauwinkl, that then goes on to Kleinarl. The ski bus has an outstanding connection between the different alpine areas.
Altenmarkt is also ranked high on the list of Austrian cross country skiing areas. With over 180 km of ski trails in the area, Altenmarkt is definitely a favourite destination for cross country skiers.
